GUIDE FOR SMT and THT LINE CONCEPTS - TOTAL LINE SOLUTIONS

SMT stands for surface mount technology. This is a process for mounting electrical components (SMD - Surface Mount Devices) directly on the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB).

SMT technology has essentially replaced THT (through-hole technology) in the industry, as improved automation of manufacturing has reduced costs and increased quality. It is also possible to fit more components on a given area of the PCB (higher component density).

However, due to the ever increasing currents on a PCB and the demands on the components, THT technology is increasingly returning. In electromobility in particular, more and more components have to be soldered to the PCB using a wave soldering system or a selective soldering system.  Plugs and sockets are also being used more and more in through-hole assembly.

But how are the right machines selected for an production line?

Due to the different requirements for SMD production, the first consideration is whether to pursue a stand-alone solution or a complete, if possible automated line concept. Space and energy supply also play an important role.
As always, the budget for such a project should not be forgotten.

We experience time and again that customers "shoot at sparrows" and spend a lot of money on systems that are often unsuitable for their requirements. Keyword: product portfolio, real placement performance, inspection depth, energy supply and much more.  This means that the ROI analysis that has been made theoretically is quickly not to be shown in practice due to inexperience and the wrong investment in the machinery.

SMT lines that are designed for high production capacities usually consist of several high-speed placement machines and a multifunction placement machine. Of course, the other SMT production lines must also be designed for the cycle time and speed so that a bottleneck does not occur.
Usually the same products run here for several days, weeks or even months.

Small and medium production lines are particularly suitable for small and medium-sized companies in order to be able to react quickly to customer requests and to carry out the associated rapid product changes.  High- Mix - Low to Medium - Volume
